Bioidentical Hormone Therapy (BHRT)

Treatment Overview

Hormone changes can affect how you feel every day: hot flushes, night sweats, poor sleep, low energy, mood changes or brain fog. At Verve Clinic, our doctor assesses your symptoms and blood tests, then tailors your treatment: bioidentical hormone therapy for women in perimenopause or menopause and for men with symptoms of low testosterone, and hormone care for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We also check and optimise thyroid function where needed. Treatment is prescribed only after a full assessment, and reviewed regularly.

how it works

What are bioidentical hormones? Bioidentical hormones have the same chemical structure as the hormones your body makes, such as oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

For women: For perimenopause and menopause symptoms, treatment may be given as tablets, gels or patches, depending on your needs and medical history.

For men: For symptoms of low testosterone, such as tiredness, low mood or reduced strength, treatment may be given as injections or topical creams.

For PCOS: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition that can cause irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth and weight gain. After blood tests, our doctor plans treatment to help manage your symptoms, which may include hormonal treatment, supplements and lifestyle advice.

Thyroid, stress and insulin hormones: Thyroid hormones, the stress hormone cortisol and insulin all affect energy, weight and mood, so we check them as part of your assessment and address them where needed.

Supplements: Where blood tests show they would help, our doctor may also prescribe supplements.

Is it right for me? Hormone therapy is not suitable for everyone. Our doctor reviews your medical and family history, and explains the benefits and risks with you before recommending any treatment.

How common are menopause and PCOS?

According to the World Health Organization, most women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55 (WHO menopause fact sheet). PCOS affects an estimated 10 to 13% of women of reproductive age, and up to 70% of women with PCOS do not know they have it (WHO PCOS fact sheet). If your symptoms sound familiar, a consultation and blood tests can show whether hormones are playing a part.

Who should consider hormone therapy?

  • Men with symptoms of low testosterone, such as tiredness, low mood or reduced strength
  • Women with PCOS who want help managing their symptoms
  • Anyone who wants their thyroid, cortisol or insulin levels assessed through health screening and blood tests
